Winter Show 2009
By Dorothy Dawson
At the SWPCA Winter Show, Ingliston EC., supreme ridden honours were captured by
Carenza Dickens’ Cedar Farm Top Man (Burstye Poseidon/ Cedar Farm Red Ribbons),
which had been reserve supreme at the Festival of Champions, SNEC. The fourteen
year old gelding was not only the members’ ridden champion, but also overall
partbred champion of the show. Mary Nicoll’s Elvet Challenger, a section B
stallion by Defaelog Luke, was reserve supreme, shown by Zoe Martelle Nicoll. He
had been an orphan foal, bred by Kevin and Jane Stewart near Durham, and was a
medal winner in 2008, shown by Charlie Knight.
Challenger was novice ridden champion, with the bay cob gelding Skelwith
Rocket’s Flash Dance, shown by Lauren Aitchison, a member of West Perthshire
Pony Club, reserve. He was also reserve to Laura Keay’s section C gelding
Coedeneirin Reward, in the open ridden section. Reward had been overall ridden
champion at the SWPCA Spring
Show. It was in the worker ring that Flash Dance really excelled, scooping
overall honours after winning the open section from Sarah Gemmell’s Grange
Homeward Sparrow. The novice champion, Gordon Bowden’s Machno Showtime, ridden
by Emma Young, was reserve overall.
Sixteen year old Emma is a member of East Lothian Pony Club. Showtime, bred by
Meirion Jones at Penmachno, Conwy, has been a champion show jumper and third
overall in the dressage section of the British Equine Federation young pony
evaluations. He is a son of the Welsh cob Carregcoch Bleddyn.
Eight year old Georgina Quinian rode Shona Thomson’s section A gelding Cromagtir
Dylan into reserve place amongst the members’ entries after winning the first
ridden class. The mini champion was the leading rein pony Ceannaiteach Marco,
with six year old Jamie McLaughlan aboard, and the reserve was the first ridden
winner, Julie Grant’s
Llanarw Betsan. Members of Sunart & District Pony Club headed the young
handlers, with Louise Ferguson, showing Durris Fair Wind, winning the
championship, and Eva McMenemy, with Wilcrick Sandstorm, reserve.
RhydymeirchTwysog Swallow, ridden by Irene McKelvey, won the BHS 2007 Novice 27
dressage contest, with Gladys Dale’s cob Scole Pretty Maid standing top of the
large entry in the BHS 2006 Prelim 13 class.
Champion of the mixed mountain and moorland in-hand entry, as well as reserve in
the members in-hand section and in the Welsh yearling championship, was Eleanor
Crate’s Skellorn Grafitti (Glansevin Grafitti/ Skellorn Ebony Rose), a June-born
yearling colt which had been second at the Royal Highland. Reserve amongst the
native ponies was Eleanor’s partbred Penmaric Beginagain, by Passford Sunnay
Boy.
The members’ in-hand title went to Shona
Thomson’s Synod Raimunda, a medal winning mare which had been champion both
in-hand and ridden. She was also the adult in-hand champion with Shona’s cob
stallion Pennal The Great, reserve.
After a break of thirteen years, during which they have been concentrating on
section B ponies, the Davdor Stud showed a chestnut roan section A colt Davdor
Spring Majik, produced by Charlie Cousens, to be foal champion and supreme
youngstock champion. He is by Blackhill Picalo and out of a mare bought at Fayre
Oaks, Pinfold Spring Melody, which, although grey herself, is by the
chestnut stallion Ringstead Major. The reserve youngstock title was won by
Gail Rooney’s Oakmill Hesta at her first show. This section C filly is
a daughter of Oakmill Lysander (great grandson of Persie Renown) and out of
Moorcroft The Goddess, by Synod The Messiah. The yearling champion was Lesley
and Kevin Moy’s Cromagtir Daman ( Flydon Hiwmor/ Cromagtir Don).
